Your about me page

When I shared my last Cup of Tea & A Few Thoughts, I mentioned something that stayed with me long after I'd finished writing.

I talked about helping people find the words to tell their story. The more I thought about it, the more I realised just how often this comes up. So, pop the kettle on, because this week I'd love to talk about the page that almost everyone struggles to write...

The "About Me" page.

I've lost count of the number of times I've asked someone to tell me about their business. Usually, they don't hesitate. They tell me how they started, what they love about their work, the customers they've helped, the challenges they've overcome and why they still get excited about what they do. There's always a sparkle.

Then I ask them to write their About page.

Everything changes.

Suddenly, they're worried about sounding arrogant. They don't want to appear boastful. They wonder if anyone really wants to know about them. And before long, they're staring at a blank page wondering where on earth to begin. If that sounds familiar, I promise you're not alone.

In fact, I think it's one of the most common things I come across and I completely resonate because it happens to me too. The funny thing is, if I asked you to write about your best friend or a business you admire, you'd probably find it much easier.

We naturally see the strengths in other people. We're much less comfortable recognising them in ourselves. But here's the thing...

Your About page isn't about having an ego. It's not about listing every qualification you've ever gained or every achievement you've ever celebrated. It's about helping someone feel they're in safe hands. When someone visits your website, they're quietly asking themselves questions.

Who am I trusting?

Do they genuinely care about what they do?

Will I feel comfortable working with them?

Sharing your experience, your qualifications or the story behind your business isn't about impressing people. It's about giving them confidence that they're in safe hands. When people understand who you are, why you do what you do and the experience you bring, trust begins to grow naturally, often long before you've even spoken to each other.

One of the things I enjoy most about creating websites isn't actually building the website itself. It's listening. Listening until I understand someone's story. Helping them see what makes them different. Finding the words they've been trying to find for years. Because more often than not, the things you think are ordinary are exactly what make your business memorable.

So, if you're putting off writing your About page because you don't know where to start, here's a little thought.

Don't start with what you do, start with why you care and everything else usually follows.

Until next time...

Kettle on. ☕
