Do I need SEO
If you've ever looked into having a website built, you've probably come across the term SEO. It seems to pop up everywhere, usually accompanied by promises of getting your business to the top of Google or warnings that your website will never be found without it. It's no wonder so many small business owners feel overwhelmed.
So, do you really need SEO? The simple answer is yes... but probably not in the way you've been led to believe.
So, what actually is SEO?
SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation, but don't let the name put you off. At its heart, it's simply about helping search engines understand what your website is about, so they can show it to the right people at the right time.
It isn't a magic formula, and it certainly isn't about trying to trick Google. Good SEO starts with something much simpler than that, it’s about creating a website that's useful, easy to understand and answers the questions your customers are already asking.
Google isn't trying to catch you out.
Every time someone searches online, Google is trying to answer one simple question:
"Which website is most likely to help this person?"
It's not looking for the business that has spent the most money or used the latest marketing trick. Instead, it's looking for websites that appear trustworthy, relevant and genuinely helpful. That's why good SEO has very little to do with shortcuts and everything to do with creating quality content that people want to read.
A beautiful website is only part of the story.
I come across plenty of websites that look fantastic. They have beautiful images, lovely colours and a professional design, but they never clearly explain what the business does, who it helps or why someone should choose them.
If a visitor lands on your website and can't quickly understand how you can help, they'll probably leave. Google notices that too.
A clear message, well-written content and a logical structure often make a much bigger difference than people realise.
The good news? You don't need to do everything at once.
One of the biggest misconceptions about SEO is that it's a one-off task. Tick a few boxes, add a handful of keywords and you're done.
In reality, it's much more like looking after a garden.
You plant the foundations, keep things healthy, add something new every now and again and gradually watch it grow.
Updating your services, writing the occasional blog, adding recent projects or answering common customer questions all help your website stay relevant over time.
Small, consistent improvements almost always outperform chasing the latest SEO trend.
Write for people first.
This is probably the best piece of SEO advice I can give.
Don't write for Google.
Write for the person sitting at their kitchen table looking for someone who can help. If your website answers their questions, explains your services clearly and makes it easy to take the next step, you're already giving Google exactly what it's looking for.
The technical side of SEO certainly matters, but it works best when it's supporting great content rather than trying to replace it.
So... do you really need SEO?
Yes.
Every business website benefits from good SEO, but that doesn't mean you need expensive monthly packages, endless blog posts or complicated strategies. For most small businesses, the best place to start is with a well-built website, clear content and information that's genuinely useful to the people you want to reach.
The rest can grow naturally over time.
So to summarise:
Good SEO isn't about chasing algorithms or trying to outsmart Google.
It's about creating a website that's worth finding.
When you focus on helping people first, search engines usually follow.
